La tragedia comenzó por una disputa virtual. Gabriel le pidió prestados a Daniel (la moneda del juego), equivalentes a unos pocos dólares en la vida real. Sin embargo, Gabriel bloqueó a Daniel en sus contactos para no pagarle la deuda. Este acto de inmadurez infantil fue el detonante de una furia desproporcionada en Petry, quien ya tenía antecedentes de comportamiento agresivo y problemas psiquiátricos. Gabriel quedó inconsciente. Daniel, pensando que ya lo había matado, decidió que debía deshacerse del cuerpo.
Debido a que Daniel tenía 16 años en el momento del crimen, fue juzgado bajo el de Brasil. La pena máxima para un menor de edad en ese país es de 3 años de internamiento en un centro socioeducativo.
Daniel bajó al sótano, buscó una sierra para metales y regresó a la habitación. Comenzó a cortar las piernas de Gabriel a la altura de las rodillas. Lo que hace este caso especialmente atroz es que Gabriel recuperó el conocimiento mientras era mutilado. Según las pericias forenses, el niño intentó resistirse y gritó de dolor mientras Daniel continuaba el acto.
